Bringing Location Intelligence to Shared Mobility: How INVERS Uses HERE Location Services via MBI

How can mobility operators know how their vehicles are being used once they are out on the road? Traditionally, vehicle rentals were a black box. Especially in cases where users can unlock, use, and return vehicles without staff being present. For shared fleets used by different drivers throughout the day, reliable insights into driving behavior make a significant difference, helping operators identify risky driving, protect their vehicles and reduce the costs and downtime associated with vehicle damage.

Shared mobility depends on technology that makes vehicle fleets easy to access, operate and manage. Our HERE Technologies Solution Partner INVERS provides integrated hardware and software solutions that enable carsharing, rental and other mobility operators to launch and operate shared vehicle fleets at scale.

Through their partnership with MBI as an official HERE Distributor, INVERS integrates HERE location technology into its Driving Analysis solution. By combining connected vehicle data with precise road and speed limit information, INVERS helps mobility operators gain greater transparency into driving behavior and identify speeding events more reliably.

Why Reliable Speeding Detection Requires More Than GPS Data

Shared mobility operators manage vehicles that are rented, returned and rented again with little or no manual inspection between trips. Risky driving can therefore easily go unnoticed, while resulting vehicle damage, repair costs and downtime can become significant cost factors.

INVERS’ Driving Analysis gives operators greater visibility into how their vehicles are being driven, including where and when critical driving behavior occurs. Speeding is an important part of this analysis, but reliably identifying a speeding event is more complex than simply measuring how fast a vehicle is moving.

GPS data can provide a vehicle’s position and speed, but it does not by itself determine which road the vehicle is travelling on, or which speed limit applies. This distinction is particularly important where roads run close together or where speed limits vary along a route. To turn a GPS trace into a reliable speeding event, INVERS therefore needs to accurately match the vehicle’s position to the road network and determine the applicable speed limit.

Matching GPS Traces to the Correct Road with HERE Route Matching

To achieve this, INVERS uses the HERE Route Matching API together with HERE road attribute and speed limit data, licensed through MBI. HERE Route Matching maps GPS waypoints to the corresponding road network, enabling INVERS to determine the road a vehicle was traveling on and connect the recorded driving data with the relevant road attributes.

This provides the location context needed for reliable speeding detection. Instead of treating GPS data in isolation, INVERS can evaluate vehicle speed against the speed limit of the matched road segment and turn raw location data into meaningful driving events.

“Precise, up-to-date map and speed limit data from HERE is what makes it possible for us to turn a simple GPS trace into a reliable speeding event our Driving Analysis customers can act and rely on”, explains Niklas Kilian, Head of Product at INVERS.

How INVERS Driving Analysis Turns Location Data into Actionable Fleet Insights

Driving Analysis helps operators move from limited visibility during a rental to data-driven insights into how vehicles are being used. In addition to speeding, the solution can detect driving events such as harsh acceleration and braking, hard cornering and crashes. These events can be evaluated in context and used to support operational workflows, helping operators identify trips that require attention and take targeted action. For example, operators can put restrictions on drivers that consistently show problematic driving behavior or reward good drivers with discounts.

For shared mobility providers, this can support a more proactive approach to fleet protection. Instead of waiting for accidents to happen, usually caused by problematic driving patterns, operators can use driving behavior insights to identify those risky patterns, take proactive action, and reduce the operational and financial impact associated with dangerous driving.

INVERS and MBI: Bringing HERE Location Technology into Shared Mobility

As a global HERE Distributor, MBI provides INVERS with access to the HERE location services used within Driving Analysis. The partnership combines INVERS’ expertise in shared mobility technology with HERE location data and MBI’s expertise in licensing, partner enablement and technical support.

Through MBI, INVERS has a dedicated and responsive point of contact for HERE licensing, usage tracking and support questions, as well as access to enterprise-grade HERE location technology with a licensing setup suited to its requirements. By supporting the commercial and operational aspects of using HERE services, we enable the INVERS team to focus on developing and operating its mobility solutions.

The collaboration is a strong example of how HERE location technology can become an integral component of specialized mobility solutions. In INVERS’ Driving Analysis, precise location intelligence is not simply used to determine where a vehicle has been. It provides the road context required to transform telematics data into meaningful information that fleet operators can use to better understand driving behavior.

This is what great partnerships are about for us at MBI: connecting technology providers with the HERE services they need and supporting them in bringing location-enabled solutions to market.
